NCAA GYMNASTICS WVU gymnasts face No. 14 Penn State
The West Virginia University gymnastics team will face No. 14 Penn State in a dual meet at 2 p.m. Saturday at University Park, Pa. The Mountaineers (4-5, 20 EAGL) are currently averaging 192.044 points per competition and are coming off a second-place finish in a home quad meet last week, scoring 192.700 points. After their performances last week, gymnasts Mehgan Morris and Shelly Purkat picked up weekly league honors. Morris was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Week, while Purkat earned her second consecutive EAGL Specialist of the Week award. The 14th-ranked Nittany Lions average 194.592 points per meet and have a season-high score of 195.100 in 2008. PSU’s two strongest events are the uneven bars (48.767 avg.) and floor (48.792 avg.). They rank 12th in the nation in both events. Penn State leads the all-time series 30-5 since the two schools first met in 1979.
NCAA TRACK WVU to hold State Farm Games
The West Virginia University women’s track team will serve as the host to the State Farm Games on Saturday at the WVU Shell Building. The field events will get under way at 9 a.m., with the weight throw and long jump. The running events will begin at 10 a.m., with the 5,000-meter run. The home meet will be the second of the indoor season for the Mountaineers as WVU held the annual Holiday Classic on Dec. 8.
