When I was a little girl, my neighbor's dog, Gypsy had a litter of 11 pups. Gypsy was a Blue Tick Retriever and she had an 'oops' litter. Gypsy was VERY proud of those puppies even though they weren't AKC puppies..
When they were ready to be away from momma, she marched EVERY one of those puppies across the road and through our yard, and up our porch steps where my mom was sitting.. She KNEW my mom was the lady of the house and handicapped. Well my mother fell in LOVE with the little runt.. She wasn't letting him go BACK with Gypsy and the litter.
We named him Joe, after our bus driver to school.
Jpe was the most amazing dog. He always looked out for us kids and he was mindful to keep all the bunnies and the deer away from our huge garden.
Joe was also SOOO sweet in his mature age. The same neighbors across the road eventually got a female Huskey named kelly. I remember Joe allowing Kelly to sleep IN HIS dog box, though Kelly had her own. Joe slept on TOP of his dog box to let Kelly sleep in HIS and to keep her safe.
Joe lived for almost 15 years.

We always had dogs, inside and outside dogs. Loved them all. We now have a red tabby oriental short-hair cat and he is in charge of the house - Alpha male, and definitely part of the family.
