Mountaineers to host Notre Dame
MORGANTOWN — West Virginia’s baseball team hopes to snap Notre Dame’s 10 game winning streak Friday night when they open a three game weekend series at Hawley Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Fighting Irish leads the Big East with a 10-2 league log and an overall 23-9 mark. The Mountaineer are 27-9 overall and 7-5 in the conference. This will be the 47th meeting between the schools in a rivalry Notre Dame leads by a 32-14 margin. Dave Schrage is in his second season as head coach of the Irish, who were 28-28 last spring. WVU salvaged a 16-7 victory in last year’s series at South Bend after losing the first two games by 5-2 and 17-6. Josh Whitlock (6-2) probably will be the starting pitcher for the Mountaineers Friday night. He has a 4.80 earned run average for 54.1 innings, 43 strikeouts and 29 walks. David Phelps, who leads ND with a 4-3 record and 3.31 ERA, was named Big East Pitcher of the Week. He’ll get the call after allowing five hits and one run in 8.2 innings in his last outing. Third baseman A.J. Pollock again was named Big East Player of the Week. He went 11-for-19 with eight runs scored and five RBIs in his team’s 5-0 week. WVU still has six batters hitting .400 or better. Shortstop Tyler Kuhn leads the club with 27 extra-base hits, including seven home runs. Third baseman Vince Belnome has a team-high 53 RBIs. The second game of the series will be played at 3 p.m. Saturday, with the finale set for 1 p.m. Sunday
