Notre Dame gets ahead early to defeat WVU, 8-4
MORGANTOWN – Notre Dame jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first four innings Friday night en route to an 8-4 victory over West Virginia in the opener of a three-game baseball series. The game drew 986 fans. In stretching their winning streak to 11, the Fighting Irish remained in first place in the Big East standings. They now are 24-9 overall and 11-2 in the conference. The Mountaineers are 2710, including a 7-6 league log. Notre Dame collected 11 hits and West Virginia had nine. The biggest blow of the night was first baseman Evan Sharpley’s eighth home run of the season in the third inning for the Irish. Greg Sherry went 3-for-3 in the winning attack, while David Mills and Brayden Ashdown chipped in two hits each. Third baseman Vince Belmone and catcher Tobias Streich led the Mountaineers with two hits apiece. Second baseman Jedd Gyorko doubled, scored and drove in a run. Starter David Phelps was the winning pitcher. He allowed three runs and seven hits while striking out 10 in seven innings. The loss was charged to Josh Whitlock, who gave up eight hits and seven runs in six innings. Eric Saffel finished. The teams clash again at 3 p.m. Saturday.
