Agreste leads WVU to win
PITTSBURGH — First baseman Joe Agreste enjoyed a career day leading West Virginia to a 9-1 victory over Duquesne on Tuesday evening in a non-conference baseball game at Duquesne Field. The junior from Chesapeake, Va., went 4 for 5 with two home runs, a double and single while driving in six runs, his collegiate best. He fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle and finished with nearly half his team’s 10 hits. “He had a real big day for us and some clutch RBIs in almost every at-bat,” coach Greg Van Zant said. “He was a big reason we scored all those runs.” Senior southpaw pitcher Matt Yurish (4-1) gave up just one run but allowed the Dukes all of their eight hits. Freshman Jarryd Summers did not surrender either a hit or run in working the final four innings. Yurish, who struck out seven and walked two, had to be lifted because of his pitch count. The loss was charged to Matt Passauer (2-1), who allowed seven runs, seven hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings. In beating Duquesne for the third time this season, the Mountaineers made their record 29-11 overall. The Dukes now are 15-21. Catcher Tobias Streich and second baseman Jedd Gyorko had two hits each for WVU. First baseman Aaron Janusey led Duquesne with three hits and Mark Tracy had two. The Mountaineers resume Big East action at 7:05 p.m. Friday in the start of a three game series against Connecticut in Morgantown.
