WVU defeats UConn, 10-1
MORGANTOWN – West Virginia jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning Friday night en route to a 10-1 victory over Connecticut in the opener of a crucial three-game Big East baseball series at Hawley Field. In posting their 30th victory of the season, including 9-7 in the conference, the Mountaineers surpassed last year’s overall total of 29 wins. The Huskies, now 21-23 and 7-12, had beaten WVU in five of their last six meetings. Their only run of the night came in the third inning. West Virginia collected 15 hits, including three-for-five and five RBIs by shortstop Tyler Kuhn. He drove in two of three insurance runs in the eighth inning, the other RBI by Jedd Gyorko, who also had three hits. UConn was limited to just four hits. Right-hander Josh Whitlock (7-3) pitched seven inning, allowing just two hits and the lone run while striking out four and walking five. Southpaw Eric Saffel gave up two hits and fanned two in relief. The loss was charged to John Folino (3-3), who went seven innings. He settled down after surrendering those seven runs and nine hits in the first inning.
