CAIRNS, Australia — In its best game to date on the Australian summer tour, the West Virginia University women’s basketball team routed the Cairns Dolphins, 98-50, Monday evening at the Bendigo Bank Basketball Complex.
“We wanted to come out and play hard, especially since we had been off for two days,” Coach Mike Carey said. “We had a lot of energy, especially early on. We were moving on offense and we were able to get our running game going as well.
“It got sloppy late because we were up by so much, but our intensity was always there which was pleasing.”
Senior guard Lateefah Joye led all scorers with 21 points on 8-13 shooting and five free throws. Redshirt freshman guard Kelly Smith added 17 points on 6-8 shooting. including 3-3 from 3-point range.
Three other Mountaineers added double-digit scoring evenings: Senior guard LaQuita Owens (17), senior center Olayinka Sanni (16), and junior guard Sparkle Davis (11).
“Chakhia Cole came back tonight from her ankle injury and provided a bit of a spark, and Kelly Smith scoring again really created a new dynamic for the offense.
“Lateefah Joye had a great game and has really played with a lot of energy down here in Australia. She’s really done some good things on this summer tour.”
WVU raced to a 30-8 first-quarter advantage on the strength of eight Sanni points, and the squad never looked back. The Mountaineers shot a blistering 57.1 percent in the quarter and its aggressive defense forced eight Dolphins turnovers and limited it to just six shot attempts. WVU led at halftime by 53-19.
For the contest WVU shot 47 percent and forced 28 turnovers. The Mountaineers, 4-0 on the tour, out-rebounded Cairns 46-26 and held the Dolphins to just 32.5 percent shooting for the game (13-40).
