Thanks MJ! We'll do our best to be safe. Looks like Ike is popping our hurricane cherry, but I think we're pretty prepared. We live about 50 miles inland...so we're getting all of the loose outdoor items back inside. What worries me most is that we live in a new development and the street directly behind ours is 100% under construction with TONS of loose bricks, wood, nails, and so forth. The current path has a weakened eye coming CLOSE to the Katy, TX (which is where we live), but again - 50 miles inland, so it should be down to a Cat 1 or even a tropical storm by that time. As long as I keep power, I'll keep you guys posted.

Flashlights, canned food and a can opener.....and if they tell you to evacuate, do it. Consider boarding up your windows.

board up especially that side of the house that has all the construction crap (ie projectiles) A shingle from my roof broke the window in my bedroom.. If you have a gas grill get a full propane tank, If you don't already have them.. Car cell phone chargers.. a non cordless phone for the house.. Bottles of drinking water and wahs the dishes water and brush your teeth water) .. Fill up bath tubs with water. (You may need to use ot to flush the toilet later) umm what else? Did I mention makingi ICE fill the freezer full of zip lock bags of water and make ICE. Ice is more important than anything if you are without power.. after the ice melts in the sip locks you can drink it, cook with it, use it to brush your teeth.. Oh and coolers.. Actually the BEST coolers are the cheeap styrophome ones. You can use your washing mashine as a cooler too.. just wrap a big blaket around it.. If water from melting ice oozes out,, it will just go down the drain. Also I log into Weatherunderground.com. The Meteoroligist Jeff Masters is the BOMB! Way better than Jim Cantore or Steve Lyons from the weather Channel. Great breakfast food is those cereal bars or pop tarts I'm babbling.. Be safe my friend and check in with us as soon as you can.

Just read where Ike is supposed to hit tonight: www.accuweather.com/news-top-headline.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=0&date=2008-09-11_23:15They've already postponed the Houston Texans game, but more importantly: Doug, be safe my brother. I know you'll do all you can to prepare for what seems to be your first hurricane. I am worried about you right you and your wife... may God watch over you two and protect you all... it seems Mary Jane gave all the advice when it came to preparing for 'canes. Again, be safe.

You guys gave some awesome advice!! Thanks!! I'm filling ziplock baggies of water to put in the freezer now!
As far as the storm, they are thinking the eye is going to pass through downtown Houston and then head directly North. I'm about 25 miles west of downtown, so that's pretty close to the eye of the storm, plus I realize it can change in a heartbeat. I've got the news on now and the surge is already flooding Galveston Island. SOOO GLAD that I don't live on the coast.

Honey they eye is just a point of the storm.. Ike is HUGE and hurricane force winds extend 105 miles from the center.. So just be careful.. Hunker down and listen to the locals.

Just to give you an Idea of how MASSIVE this Hurricane is..
Here in Pensacola for the past 2 days we have had at least a 6 foot storm surge and the waves are about 15 feet tall.. We are getting amazing stiff gusts of wind, that is shifting from East to west to south to north..
This hurricane is hundreds of miles away from us. Its so weird to see flooding all over the place and it hasn't rained yet.
