NCAA SOCCER Women remain No. 14 The West Virginia University women’s soccer team held its Top15 ranking in a pair of collegiate soccer polls following 1-0-1 effort at home last week. The Mountaineers held tight at No. 14 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Adidas poll and jumped two spots to No. 15 in the Soccer America poll. WVU received a No. 17 ranking in Tuesday’s Soccer Buzz poll.
CROSS COUNTRY WVU ranked No. 6 The West Virginia University cross country team has been ranked No. 6 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s (USTFCCA) Division I Women’s National Poll, released Tuesday. “The ranking is a reflection of how we finished last season,” coach Sean Cleary said. “The true test will be in the coming weeks when we come out of the preseason and enter into the 2008 season.”

NCAA TRACK WVU runner honored by Big East West Virginia University redshirt freshman Ahna Lewis was named Thursday Big East Cross Country Athlete of the Week. The Morgantown native was the first collegiate runner — and second overall — to cross the finish line at the Old Nassau Run, hosted by Princeton University, last Saturday. Lewis finished with a time of 21:53.10, in the 6K race, a careerbest, to lead the Mountaineers to a fourth-place finish.
NCAA SOCCER Henderson leads WVU to win Redshirt freshman Erica Henderson stole the show in her first collegiate start Thursday evening as 14th-ranked West Virginia posted a 4-0 shutout against Pitt at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. “Erica was great tonight and made quite the statement in her first start,” said coach Nikki IzzoBrown. “She gives us such a burst of energy and her two goals were a result of hard work and effort.” Henderson, who entered the game with three shots on the season, put WVU ahead 1-0 seven minutes into the Big East opener for both teams. The Rochester, N.Y., native finished a corner kick started by junior Nicole Mailloux and a flick from junior Carolyn Blank.
