MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Former West Virginia University baseball player Austin Markel has signed a free agent deal with the Florida Marlins.
The centerfielder from Elizabethton, Pa., is the fourth Mountaineer to sign with a professional team during the offseason, joining teammates Tobias Streich (Minnesota Twins), Vince Belnome (San Diego Padres) and Billy Gross (Baltimore Orioles). He is expected to report to the short-season single A Jamestown Jammers of the New York-Penn League.
Markel played four seasons at WVU, carrying a career batting average of .326 with 28 home runs, 156 RBI, 37 doubles, 17 triples and 75 runs scored. He also tallied a .567 slugging percentage.
