Polar Bears win GEICO Classic ONA — Fairmont Senior’s boys’ cross country team continued its strong start at Saturday’s GEICO Classic at Cabell Midland High School, cruising to a first place finish. In all, the Polar Bears had five runners place in the top 30. Junior Dayton McVicker led the way with a third-place run in 16:45. The time was just five seconds behind the race winner, Cabell Midland freshman Jacob Burcham. Patrick Stanton (17:03, seventh place) added the other top 10 finish for Fairmont Senior. Jordyn Work (17:32, 17th), Gannon Flowers (17:47, 28th) and Joe Vozniak (29th, 17:48) also had solid runs for the Polar Bears. Brandon Latocha was North Marion’s top boys runner, finishing 95th. In the girls varsity race, North was fifth in the team standings and Fairmont Senior took seventh. The top local finisher was Huskies’ senior Jordan McDonald, who placed third overall with a time of 19:42. Emma Harrison (21:09, 26th) and Devin Elliott (21:11, 27th) also nabbed top 30 finishes for North. Alyssa Scherich (20:24, 10th) and Chelsea Clark (20:26, 11th) were the Polar Bears’ top place-winners. Peyton Adkins of Gallia Academy (Ohio) won the girls race in 19:13 and was finished nearly 20 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.
