Huskies, Bears win cross country meet
RACHEL — North Marion and Fairmont Senior cruised to victories in the North Central Athletic Conference cross country meet held Wednesday at North Marion.
The Polar Bears won the boys’ race and the Huskies took home the girls’ title.
Fairmont Senior’s boys’ team finished with 50 points, followed by Preston (61); Morgantown (70); Elkins (80); University (113); North Marion (140) and East Fairmont (180).
The Huskies’ girls’ squad totaled 40 points. University was second (60), then Preston (110); Fairmont Senior (112); Buckhannon (120); Morgantown (125); East Fairmont (163) and Elkins.
“I thought the girls ran very well today,” North Marion coach Larry Mason said. “We had the football team stop practice and cheer for us as they went around the track by the practice field.”
The Huskies had four Top 10 finishers, led by Jordan McDonald (19:11.20) in 2nd. Emma Harrison was 5th (19:23.00), Devan Elliott was 6th (19:35.80) and Marcie Mason was 10th (20:15.00).
Other for North were Kelly Humphreys in 17th (20:48.40), Brittany Reynolds in 22nd (21:01.50) and Cassy Menas in 28th (21:22.60).
Elkins’ Letitia Propst, the reigning state champion, won the race in a time of 19:05.00. “She’s tough,” Mason said of Propst. “But Jordan wasn’t too far behind her. She was right there and all our girls ran a good race today.”
Fairmont Senior’s top finisher in the girls’ race was Chelsea Clark in 3rd (19:14.40).
The Polar Bears’ Alyssa Scherich was 7th (19:43.10), Olivia Duke was 19th (20:53.80), Tori Hawkins was 33rd (21:40.30) and Sierra Greenlee was 50th (24:30.50).
East Fairmont was led by Amber Trickett in 21st (21:01.00); Michaela Luckey in 23rd (21:07.70); Megan Wilson in 38th (22:11.80); Brenda Palmer in 40th (22:30.80) and Debra Smith in 41st (22:40.90).
In the boys’ race Fairmont Senior had all five scoring runners finish in the Top 20.
Dayton McVicker led the way in 2nd (16:04.80), Joseph Vozniak was 9th (17:23.20), Jordyn Work was 10th (17:25.50); George Stanton was 11th (17:27.30) and Gannon Flowers was 18th (18:02.40).
North Marion was led by Andrew Stanley in 22nd (18:13.50); Mackenie Wayne in 27th (19:04.90); Brooks Russell in 28th (19:06.80); Brandon Latocha in 29th (19:06.80) and Evan Moore in 34th (19:20.40).
Ronnie Cosco led East Fairmont in 14th (17:43.30), followed by Cutter Atha in 32nd (19;15.50); Thomas McDaniel in 43rd (20:16.20); Drew Arnett in 45th (21:31.40 and Landon Paul in 46th.
