Former West Virginia University baseball player Joe Agreste has signed a free-agent deal with the San Diego Padres.
Agreste, who played first base for the Mountaineers, is coming off a season in which he was named the Gateway Grizzlies Newcomer of the Year. The Chesapeake, Va., native batted .303 with five home runs, 33 RBIs, 18 doubles, four triples and 35 runs for the independent Frontier League squad.
In his two-year career at WVU, Agreste batted .314 with 11 homers, 96 RBIs, 30 doubles, eight triples and 118 hits in 105 games. He earned All-Big East third-team honors in 2008 and was an integral part of WVU's record-breaking 2009 team that set school marks for batting average (.360), RBIs (491), doubles (161), extra-base hits (242) and runs (525).

WVU WRESTLING: West Virginia wrestling coach Craig Turnbull has announced the signing of Mike Morales and George Scheffel for the 2010-11 academic year.
Morales is in his senior year at Brick Memorial High in Brick Town, N.J. He owns a 111-11 overall record and won his first state title last year at the 140-pound weight class. Morales is ranked sixth at his weight class (135) by Wrestling USA Magazine.
Sheffel, an Oakland, Md., resident, attends Southern Garrett High. He has won three state titles and holds a 114-7 record.
