Bears’ McVicker to run at national meet
BY NICK CAMMUSO TIMES WEST VIRGINIAN
FAIRMONT — Dayton McVicker is headed to the Big Apple.
McVicker, Fairmont Senior’s standout boys’ cross country runner, will take part in the National Scholastic Indoor Championship at the New Balance Track & Field Center March 12-14 in New York City.
The Polar Bear junior punched his ticket to the national meet with a first-place finish in the 1,600 meter run at last month’s Rubber City Open at the University of Akron’s Stile Fieldhouse.
In the process, McVicker made some history. He broke the three-year old fieldhouse record with a winning time of 4:24.52, more than two seconds better than the next closest finisher.
Like all runners, McVicker came into the race with a specific plan. His was to stay back and sit on the lead to start, then try to jump ahead of the pack during the last 200 meters.
He did just that once the race began, pacing himself in the third spot for much of the run. But he made his key move late, stepping off to the side and using one final push — that being an all-out sprint — to grab the lead.
Fortunately for McVicker, the lead stuck. First place, and the record, was all his.
“They had a jumbotron and put the times up. It was an amazing feeling,” he said.
“It was very tough,” he continued. “It was incredibly difficult the last 200 meters of the race. That was the most pain I’d ever been in.”
Not bad for someone running his first full season indoors, huh?
“Right now I’m in love with indoor,” McVicker said.
McVicker, who finished third at last season’s Class AAA state cross country meet, has gotten some help along the way. He’s currently training with Josh Simpson, a former runner at Oak Glen High School and Northern Arizona University who took part in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 10,000 meters.
“He started helping me at the end of the cross country season,” McVicker said. “Before (Akron), I had met with him the past three weeks and ran at a 4:24 pace to get ready (for the race).”
He’ll also certainly get a boost from a group of supporters — including family, teammates and Polar Bear coach Chris Neptune — set to join him in the big city.
“I’ll probably have more people come to this race (than my high school meets),” McVicker, who has never visited New York state or the rest of the Northeast, laughed. “I’ve never had my own personal fan club.”
But McVicker isn’t making the trip to check out the scenery. He wants a top six finish — which would earn him All-America honors — and everything that goes with it.
“I know what it’s going to take. I’m trying to get to the pace I need,” he said. “The top six are All-Americans and that’s my goal, to try and sneak into sixth. I’m really looking forward to it.”

CROSS COUNTRY
Polar Bears’ McVicker takes 19th at nationals
Fairmont Senior cross country runner Dayton McVicker placed 19th overall in the 1,600 meter run at last weekend’s National Scholastic Indoor Championship at the New Balance Track & Field Center in New York City.
While he missed out on an All-American spot — given to the top six finishers in each event— McVicker was fairly pleased with his performance.
“I was 13 spots and nine seconds from (being named) All-American.
It was a great experience, though,” he said.
One highlight for McVicker, a junior who took third at last year’s Class AAA state meet, was his visit to the Track and Field Hall of Fame.
“The Track and Field Hall of Fame is in the Armory where I raced. I got to see my all-time idol Steve Prefontaine's uniform in the Hall of Fame.”
