MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Big East finalized its 2010-13 bowl lineup Tuesday by extending partnerships with two games, debuting a relationship with another and trying to explain a complicated association between two of its bowls.
The Big East will again have six games for its eight members and the only addition is the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, the eighth-oldest postseason game.
However, the Liberty (Memphis, Tenn.) and the PapaJohn's.com (Birmingham, Ala.), which was part of the previous cycle, will share the No. 5 pick. A Big East team will play in only one of the two every season and must play in each at least once in the four-year cycle.
The Big East also renewed its deal with what was known as the St. Petersburg Bowl - now known as the Beef O'Brady's Bowl.
"By all accounts the Big East bowl lineup is stronger than it's ever been," Commissioner John Marinatto said. "We have aligned ourselves with great bowl games in first-class destinations."
In the Liberty/PapaJohns.com alliance, a Big East team should play a Southeastern Conference team, but only when the SEC has enough bowl-eligible teams. The SEC accommodates nine bowl-eligible teams and the Liberty and Papajohns.com will work together to see who gets Nos. 8 and 9.
Most often, the Conference USA champion will go the Liberty - but could be shifted in one year to the Birmingham game if the Liberty negotiates for a Big East-SEC matchup.
The Liberty will be Dec. 31 at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN in Memphis, Tenn. The PapaJohns.com is Jan. 8 at noon in Birmingham, Ala. The Beef O'Brady's is Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. on ESPN in St. Petersburg, Fla.
At least four and perhaps five of the Big East's bowls are against BCS conferences.
The conference champion will be in a BCS bowl. The No. 2 pick goes to the Champs Sports in Orlando, Fla., against the ACC's No. 3 team followed by the Meineke Car Care in Charlotte, N.C., against ACC No. 5 and the New Era Pinstripe, at Yankee Stadium, against Big 12 No. 7.
Toronto's International Bowl, which had a Big East team in the past cycle, has folded. The Yankee Stadium game has replaced that in the Big East list of postseason games. There are 35 bowls certified by the NCAA for the 2010 through '13 seasons.
