CLEARWATER, Fla. - West Virginia's stay in the Big East baseball tournament was short and not very sweet, as the Mountaineers lost 10-5 Thursday to South Florida.
The eighth-seeded Mountaineers (27-30) were ousted in two games in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament at Bright House Field. They were outscored 21-9 in the two games, losing 11-4 Wednesday to top seed Louisville.
WVU jumped out to a 4-1 lead in that game, and led 2-0 after two innings against USF. Colin Durborow singled in a run and another scored on a double play.
That lead evaporated quickly against WVU freshman Michael Twigg, as the Bulls took the lead on a Todd Brazeal three-run homer. Twigg lasted three innings plus one batter, giving up four hits and the three runs.
Twigg got the loss (3-1), but he fared better than his successor, Chris Enourato. Enourato allowed a fifth-inning run on a wild pitch, yielded three in the sixth and two more RBI singles in the seventh. At 9-3, WVU's fate was all but sealed.
Clark Sambuco homered in the bottom of the ninth, but that was much too little for WVU. USF (26-31), the fifth seed, plays the loser of Thursday's late game between top seed Louisville and No. 4 St. John's.
