MORGANTOWN - Jim Clements has insisted all along that during his search for West Virginia's next athletic director, he would not make it a public process or discuss the particulars of the search.
So even when he agreed to talk about it on Thursday, he really didn't.
West Virginia University's first-year president did, however, say that his screening committee is on schedule and that he still hopes to have a successor named by the time Ed Pastilong's retirement becomes effective at the end of next month, but that choosing the right candidate will take precedent over any rigid timeline.
"It doesn't have to be done by [June 30], but it's a goal,'' Clements said. "Ed has said that he'll be available for as long as we need.''
In late April, Clements named a seven-member screening committee to go through applications for a position that last was open more than two decades ago when Pastilong was promoted from within. The screening committee is not a search committee and will have very little to do with the actual selection of an athletic director beyond aiding in paring the list of candidates.
Clements has said that he will at some point name "a broader interview team to further screen and assess candidates.''
For now, though, the process still seems almost in its infancy and Clements once again shed no light on specifics.
"The process is moving forward and we're happy with where we are,'' Clements said Thursday. "We have a great pool of candidates. Keep in mind this is a national undertaking, so our list of applicants goes from coast to coast.''
