MORGANTOWN - Liz Repella keyed a strong inside game for West Virginia with 22 points and nine rebounds Monday night during a 69-49 Big East women's basketball victory against St. John's.
Sarah Miles added 16 points and Korinne Campbell 13 for the Mountaineers (22-8, 8-8), who broke open a tight game on Senior Night with a solid second half.
"Needless to say, we needed that one,'' said WVU coach Mike Carey. "I'm happy for the seniors. I thought Sarah Miles stepped up - Liz, Korinne [Campbell]. I thought Madina [Ali], again was in foul trouble first half, but in the second half she came in after I sat her out a little bit, but when she came back in she scored a couple of buckets that really helped us. I'm really proud of them.''
West Virginia led just 30-24 at halftime, but held the Red Storm to 35.7 percent shooting in the second half. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers hit 14-of-29 shots and 10-of-13 free throws to gain ground.
The Mountaineers also held a commanding 46-30 edge in rebounding, which allowed them to dominate points in the paint (34-14) and second-chance points (19-6).
"We outrebounded them by 16 and I thought that was important,'' Carey said. "In the second half, we hit our foul shots, started getting up the lane a little bit and created some turnovers.''
Shenneika Smith was the lone player in double figures for St. John's (20-9, 9-7) with 10 points.
Repella, Miles, Campbell, Madina Ali and Vanessa House were the seniors honored Monday night before the game. They have helped the program collect 51 wins over the past two seasons.
"I wanted these seniors to go out as a winner here on the home floor,'' Carey said. "That was just as important for me as playing for our life. They deserve it. They've done a lot of great things on and off the floor.
"We still need to go to the Big East and win one or two. I'm not putting all our eggs in the Big East tournament. My most important thing, and we kind of hurt ourselves with our seeding now because our seeding won't be as great as we want it to be, but we need to focus on the Big East tournament and the NCAA, if we get in. We have to make some noise and start playing a little better.''
A crowd of 2,605 saluted the seniors for their final regular-season home game.
