MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Dominique Rutledge, a native of Newark, N.J., who has attended a prep school and three junior colleges and didn't play this past season, joined West Virginia's 2011 basketball recruiting class Thursday, the second day of the signing period.
He joins previously signed prep prospects Keaton Miles, Aaron Brown, Pat Forsythe, Tommie McCune and Jabarie Hinds. Point guard Gary Browne, a native of Puerto Rico who played this past season in Jacksonville, Fla., committed earlier this month and should sign soon.
The Mountaineers still have one scholarship available and could have a second if junior forward Kevin Jones enters the NBA Draft and signs an agent. The signing period ends May 18.
Rutledge played against WVU point guard Truck Bryant and former WVU forward Devin Ebanks in AAU as part of the successful Team New Jersey Elite program. Coach Bob Huggins said Thursday Rutledge was "highly recommended" by another Newark native, former WVU forward Da'Sean Butler.
"Dominique is a big body who gives us athleticism and versatility on the front line," Huggins said. "He should be able to defend all of the front line positions and will give us an effective midrange scorer."
Rutledge is a 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward who attends Western Texas College, in Snyder, Texas. He redshirted this season and practiced with the Westerners, but didn't play for the team. He worked closely with Coach Jason Sautter, who took a liking to Rutledge and his potential and wanted to help Rutledge by having him focus on academics to get to a Division I school.
Rutledge started off at Newark's Malcolm X Shabazz High and then played at Edison Job Corps Academy, in nearby Edison.
He averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds per game there and graduated with offers from a handful of schools, including Marquette, but the grades weren't right and he ended up at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College.
Rutledge averaged 8.9 points and 7.3 rebounds in the 2008-09 season.
There was a coaching change at Hutchinson in the offseason and Rutledge headed to Miami Dade Junior College for the 2009-10 season. Rutledge averaged 11.6 points and 8.5 rebounds, but broke his wrist early and missed the rest of the season.
Rutledge will still have two years to play two seasons with the Mountaineers.
