While it took a bit longer than expected, West Virginia has finally received the seventh letter of intent for its latest basketball recruiting class.
Gary Browne, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound guard from Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, Fla., is the latest to join the fold. Browne is originally from Puerto Rico and his NCAA letter of intent had to be routed through there in order to secure the signature of his parents.
During his one year playing in the U.S., Browne averaged 11 points, 7.5 assists and 4.0 steals in leading Arlington Country Day to a 23-2 record. He shot 83 percent from the free-throw line and 39 percent from 3-point range. Arlington Country Day finished as the No. 16-ranked boys team in the country according to USA Today.
"Gary gives us a true point guard in this class," said coach Bob Huggins. "He has gained valuable experience with the Puerto Rico national team. He could remind some of former Mountaineer great Darris Nichols in his ability to run the team and to deliver the ball to the right people at the right time."
Browne played on Puerto Rico national teams in his age group since he was 14 years old. Last year at the FIBA U18 championship in Texas he averaged 11.8 points.
Browne joins Aaron Brown (Darby, Pa., Penn Wood High), Pat Forsythe (Brunswick, Ohio, Brunswick High), Jabarie Hinds (Mount Vernon, N.Y., Mount Vernon High), Tommie McCune (Saginaw, Mich., Saginaw High), Keaton Miles (Dallas, Texas, Lincoln High) and Dominique Rutledge (Newark, N.J., Western Texas College) as signees for the 2011-12 season.
