CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The son of a former West Virginia University basketball player was shot twice in Morgantown Tuesday evening and was "touch and go" after surgery Wednesday.
Police found Marlan Joseph Robinson lying on the ground around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, in a parking lot off 1st Street between Hall Street and Beechurst Avenue, according to the Morgantown Police Department.
An operator at Ruby Memorial Hospital said Wednesday afternoon that Robinson was coming out of anesthesia after undergoing an operation. His condition was not listed, but people close to the family said it was "touch and go" and "50-50" as of Wednesday afternoon.
Marlan Robinson, who graduated from WVU in May 2010, is the son of Maurice Robinson, a WVU basketball player from 1975 to 1978 and a teammate of current WVU coach Bob Huggins.
Warren Baker, a family friend and former WVU teammate of Robinson, said he had been at the hospital since 7 a.m. Wednesday.
"It's been an emotional roller coaster," he said.
Baker said that Marlan Robinson had been given 30 units of blood since Wednesday morning. Robinson was shot once through his forearm, which is shattered. The second bullet went through his stomach, pierced his spleen and part of his intestine and came out the other side.
"He is not in good shape. It's just one of those things where you don't know what is going to happen," Baker said.
Maurice Robinson's eldest son has sickle cell anemia and Marlan was lined up to be his brother's kidney donor, Baker said.
"They had a hard time finding a donor and a lot of people asked if they could donate but they realized that it needed to be a family member and Marlan matched up," he said. "Of course, now this comes up. How much does one family have to endure?"
When Robinson was a senior in high school, he was in a "terrible" car accident and "his family almost lost him them," Baker said. "But he got through that. He is a strong kid.
"The sitting around and waiting is the worst part," Baker said. "He's got a tough road ahead."
Baker said he was told by a third party that Marlan Robinson got a phone call Tuesday evening and told his roommate that he would be outside. "Then they heard gunshots and an eyewitness called 911."
According to a news release from Morgantown police, witnesses said the suspected shooter got into a dark vehicle, possibly a Chrysler PT Cruiser, after the shooting. Police said the suspect is a black male who was wearing a black do-rag and dark clothing. An olive-skinned male with a white sleeveless T-shirt and short dark hair was driving the vehicle, which was last seen going south on Beechurst Avenue.
Morgantown police would not comment beyond the news release, citing the ongoing investigation.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Morgantown Police Department Detective Division at 304-284-7454.
