Gerard Jones, the brother of Mountaineer forward Kevin Jones, has told MetroNews Sports that he feels there is nothing wrong with his brother’s decision to submit his name for the NBA Draft.
Jones said that he would not comment extensively on his brother’s draft status and that any questions should go through the university. However, Jones did say that mock draft sites such as DraftExpress.com, which currently has Kevin Jones listed as the 29th best junior and does not project him to be drafted, are nothing more than opinions.
“The draft sites do what they do. They have second hand information,” Gerard Jones stated. “Draft Express had Kevin in the first round of their mock draft last year, and now they have him as not being selected.”
Gerard Jones explained that underclassmen who declare for the draft are placed on an “underclassmen board” that gives the prospects a range as to where they might land.
When asked if he had spoken to any specific NBA draft scouts about Kevin’s draft status, Gerard Jones again said that was a question that should be directed to WVU.
In an April 21 interview with the Lower Hudson News-Journal, Gerard Jones was quoted as saying “A lot of scouts are really high on him if he does come out this year.”
Jones’ decision to declare for the draft does not necessarily mean he will follow through with it. College basketball allows an underclassman to declare for the NBA draft on one occasion to test their draft stock and Jones will have until May 8th to withdraw his name from consideration.
As long as Jones has not hired an agent, he can return to West Virginia for his senior year.
