MORGANTOWN - West Virginia junior Kevin Jones has been invited to participate in the weekend's NBA Draft Combine, which is hosted by the New Jersey Nets.
Jones is scheduled to work out Sunday, the same day that serves as the deadline for underclassmen to withdraw from the draft and return to school with eligibility intact.
Jones, a 6-foot-8, 250-pound All-Big East honorable mention forward, entered the draft April 21. The NCAA allows an underclassman to enter the draft without signing an agent and return to school once in his career.
Jones could stay in the draft beyond May 8 and forfeit his remaining eligibility, but, in the event of injury, withdraw on or before June 13.
As a sophomore, Jones averaged 13.5 points and 7.2 rebounds, and also shot 52.1 percent from the floor and 40.4 percent from 3-point range.
He was named All-Big East preseason first team by conference coaches for 2010-11, but his scoring and rebounding numbers were just about the same (13.1 and 7.5), while the shooting numbers dipped to 44.5 and 30.1.
He had eight double-doubles, including three straight to end the regular season, but none in WVU's three Big East and NCAA tournament games. He's No. 2 in school history in offensive rebounds with 305. Chris Brooks had 320 from 1988-91.
He'll be in the same session Sunday with a few similarly sized and skilled forwards, including Virginia Tech's Jeff Allen, Clemson's Jerai Grant, Syracuse's Rick Jackson and San Diego State's Malcom Thomas.
Following WVU's season-ending loss to Kentucky in the third round of the NCAA Tournament, when he had 8 points and 9 rebounds, Jones said, "I need to spread my game out and become a more versatile player and not so one-dimensional. That's what I need to work on. Am I ready for the next level? It's something a lot of college athletes want to do, but they're not always prepared for it. I want to make sure I'm prepared."
