West Virginia forward Kevin Jones has withdrawn his name from the NBA Draft and will return for his senior season.
“This was a good experience for me to go through the process and gain valuable feedback for my goal of playing in the NBA,” said Jones in a release from WVU Sports Information. “I’m excited about coming back to West Virginia and playing with my teammates for my senior season.”
“Kevin went through the process in a systematic and professional manner by exploring his options,” added WVU basketball coach Bob Huggins. “He was able to gain feedback from NBA professionals that will help him in the future. We’re pleased that he will be a Mountaineer for his senior season.”
Jones had worked out at an NBA combine hosted by the New Jersey Nets this weekend. He had until midnight tonight to withdraw his name.
Under NCAA rules, Jones, an underclassman, was given one opportunity to submit and withdraw his name from the draft before the deadline in order to maintain NCAA eligibility.
Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com had Jones rated as the 29th best junior in this year’s draft and did not have Jones selected in his latest mock draft. However, Givony said Jones’ decision to test his proverbial draft waters wasn’t a bad decision.
“There are a lot of players that have done that, come back and have had great seasons after that,” said Givony. “I don’t see it as a negative as long as he gets the correct information and he is fully aware of where he stands.
“If you go about it the right way and go out and do some workouts and get some feedback from scouts on what they like, and what they don’t like, and what they want to see you improve on – it can help a lot of guys.”
Jones averaged just over 13 points and 7.5 rebounds per game this past season, virtually identical to the 13.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game he averaged as a sophomore.
