Pitt scored 12 runs, and Matt Iannazzo pitched a complete game to lead the Panthers to a 12-1 victory over West Virginia in game one of the three game BIG EAST Conference weekend series at Charles L. Cost Field in Pittsburgh.
Pitt (29-19, 13-9 BIG EAST) scored 12 runs on 15 hits and committed three errors. John Schultz led the Panthers from the plate with two hits and four RBIs, Phil Konieczny finished with three hits and two RBIs, and Zach Duggan finished with two hits and an RBI. The Panthers hit three homers in tonight’s contest, one each by Schultz, Kevan Smith and David Chester.
Iannazzo (7-3) gave up one unearned run on six hits, striking out eight and walking two batters.
West Virginia (27-21, 13-9 BIG EAST) managed one run on six hits. Justin McDavid led the Mountaineers with two hits and Mark Dvorznak finished with an RBI single.
Mountaineer starting pitcher Josh McCauley (1-4) was credited with the loss, pitching five innings, giving up eight runs on 11 hits and walking six batters.
Pitt’s Smith belted a two-out homer to left center in the third inning to give the Panthers the early 1-0 lead.
The Panthers added four more runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Casey Roache led off the inning with an infield single to third base, stole second and scored on Konieczny’s single to left center. Konieczny advanced to second on Oswalt’s sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Duggan’s single to left field. Schultz homered to left field to drive in Duggan.

Oswalt reached on a fielder’s choice, advancing Konieczny to second. Duggan was hit by a pitch to load the bases, before Shultz singled to left to drive in Konieczny and Oswalt.
Chester homered to left field to begin the sixth inning to give the Panthers a 9-0 lead.
West Virginia ruined the shutout in the eighth inning when Colin Durborow reached on a three-base error by right fielder Roache and scored on Dvorznak’s single to left.
