Shortly after the Los Angeles Lakers were swept by the Dallas Mavericks in the second round of the NBA playoffs, former Laker great Magic Johnson called for a complete overhaul of the L.A. roster.
On that roster, for now, is former West Virginia forward Devin Ebanks, who is continuing to rehab a leg injury he suffered during the regular season.
“I actually have a couple more weeks left [of rehab],” Ebanks said after his exit interview with the Lakers organization. “Just keep rehabbing and resting it and we’ll get another MRI and take it from there.”
Ebanks averaged just over 3 points per game and 1.4 rebounds in 20 games for the Lakers this past season. Heading into the offseason, the rookie hopes to get healthy and improve his game to take on a bigger role for the organization next season.
"They just wanted to me to obviously get better and get stronger, work on my shooting skills, become a 3/2. They'd like me at that 2 position, especially with my length and my athletic ability. So [I’m] working on those key things,” Ebanks said.
"They would like to see me there. That's one of the things we spoke about and that's one of the things they wanted me to work on, so I'm definitely going to try."
If Ebanks can make significant strides over the summer, he could be seen as a contributing member of the franchise. As it currently stands, several key players for the Lakers only have two or three years left on their contract.
Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Ron Artest have contracts with the Lakers through 2014. Andrew Bynum, Derek Fisher and Lamar Odom are signed through 2013.
