West Virginia University has confirmed that WVU basketball guard Dalton Pepper is going to transfer. According to the press release, Pepper was released from his scholarship this afternoon.
"Dalton called me this afternoon asking for a release to transfer to another school," said WVU head basketball coach Bob Huggins in a release. "We will grant the release so he can pursue opportunities closer to home. We wish him the best."
In additon, the Levittetown Courier Times, Pepper’s hometown newspaper, said Pepper confirmed Monday night that he was transferring to Temple to be closer to home. His father, Jack, has health problems.
Jack Pepper was a standout basketball player at Pennsbury High, the same school where Dalton played and broke many of his father’s records.
Pepper played in a backup role during his first two years with West Virginia, but was expected to move into a starting position with the Mountaineers next year. He finished this past season averaging 3.9 points and 12.4 minutes in 32 games. He scored 10 points and added three steals to help secure West Virginia's NCAA tournament win over Clemson.
Pepper will have to sit out for one season before he would be eligible to play. The newspaper reports that Temple is the only school “on the radar right now.”
The Courier Times reported that Pepper told the paper twice this year that he planned to stay at West Virginia. There has been speculation for months that Pepper was going to transfer.
