MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - None of West Virginia University's 17 varsity sports will receive penalties for poor Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores and six managed a perfect score of 1,000 over the four-year period of 2006-10, the school announced Tuesday.
The NCAA released its APR data Tuesday and WVU's combined score is 974, which is up six points from 2010 and 18 points from 2008.
The NCAA four-year average is 970.
"I am pleased that all of our teams exceeded the 925 benchmark and that our average score continues to climb each year," Athletic Director Oliver Luck said. "Our teams continue to have success, not only in competition, but in the classroom as well."
The APR accounts for the eligibility and retention of student-athletes on scholarship over a four-year period and calculates a team's and a school's academic success. A student-athlete on scholarship can earn two points per semester - and four points per academic year - for being eligible for competition and remaining enrolled at the school.
The APR is calculated by adding up the total points earned on the roster and dividing that by team's total possible points. That number is then multiplied by 1,000. Teams below 925 receive immediate penalties, involving the possible loss of scholarships.
WVU has had three immediate penalties in the past - men's soccer lost 0.12 scholarships for 2007-08 and wrestling lost 0.43 scholarships for 2004-05 and 0.88 scholarships for 2006-07.
The current four-year APR scores for Mountaineers teams are: 956 for baseball; 995 for men's basketball; 972 for women's basketball; 1,000 for cross country; 962 for football; 981for gymnastics; 992 for rifle; 938 for rowing; 936 for men's soccer; 997 for women's soccer; 947 for men's swimming; 975 for women's swimming; 986 for tennis; 993 for indoor track; 9093 for outdoor track; 985 for volleyball; and 949 for wrestling 949.
For the 2009-10 academic year, cross country, rifle, women's soccer, rowing, men's soccer and tennis had perfect APR scores of 1,000.
"I want to congratulate Coach Sean Cleary and the cross country team for its perfect four-year score as well as our other teams that received a perfect score in 2009-10," Luck said. "In addition, our men's basketball, women's soccer, cross country and track teams rank in the top 10 percent in the country with their four-year APR average."
Last week men's basketball, women's cross country, women's indoor track, women's outdoor track and women's soccer received public recognition from the NCAA for their latest multiyear APR scores. They posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of their sport.
