Former West Virginia University baseball player Grant Buckner has been selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 801st overall pick in the 26th round of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.
The shortstop led the team with a .364 batting average, 48 runs, 76 hits, eight home runs and 46 RBIs in 2010. Buckner also had 14 doubles, one triple, 20 walks and was hit by 10 pitches.
The Elkview, W.Va., native took home the BIG EAST batting crown, leading the league with a .437 batting average in conference play. Buckner led the league in hits (45) and on-base percentage (.512), while being second in runs scored (25), doubles (11), total bases (70) and slugging percentage (.680). He was also fifth in RBIs (26).
Buckner ended his WVU career sixth all-time in hits (232), ninth in at-bats (672), eighth in RBIs (149), fourth in doubles (58), seventh in extra base hits (81) and ninth in multi-hit games (64)
The third team all-BIG EAST selection is one of three Mountaineers in school history to be drafted by the White Sox. Former WVU pitcher Levi Maxwell was chosen by the White Sox in the 18th round of the 2007 draft, while shortstop Tyler Kuhn was selected in the 15th round of the 2008 draft. Kuhn is still a member of the organization and is currently playing for the Double-A Birmingham Barons.
The remainder of the draft, including rounds 31-50, will wrap up on Wednesday beginning at noon on MLB.com.
