For the first time since 2008, the Mountaineers are taking part in the 2011 Pittsburgh Basketball Club Pro Am Summer League in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Pro Am is a summer league for some of the top Division I basketball players in the Pittsburgh and northern West Virginia area. All of the players taking part in the tournament are either from that areas or play college ball there.
The Mountaineer players are spread out on a few different teams, but one of the teams is loaded with all of the new incoming WVU players. The tournament allows only two players from the same school to be one team, unless they’re a freshman or a transfer player. Because of the Mountaineers big incoming recruiting class there are a total of ten players on the team SteelCityTickets.com.
That team includes many of the incoming Mountaineers: Aaron Brown, Gary Browne, Pat Forsythe, Keaton Miles, Tommy McCune, Juwan Staten, Aric Dickerson and Aaric Murray. Freshman point guard Jabarie Hinds is on the team, but hasn’t played yet because he isn’t enrolled at WVU. Also on the team is redshirt freshman forward Kevin Noreen. The rest of the players are members are from the West Virginia Wesleyan basketball team.
On Wednesday night, SteelCityTicekts.com lost in overtime to The Lair 61-60. The game ended on a missed jumper by Murray. The team is now 0-2 in the Pro Am and its two losses came by a combine total of five points. The new Mountaineers have shown some great talent on the court, but the players are still getting used to playing together. Everyone on the current team has been together for less than one week.
“We’re still meeting each other and feeling each other out on the basketball court so once we get to know each other I think it will pick up,” said freshman forward Aaron Brown.”
“We played much better than last week,” continued Brown. “Last week we got jumped out on and this week we had a lead and couldn’t finish so we just take it one step at a time.”
One advantage in this Pro Am is the freshman can get a taste of how talented Division I basketball are. The players say it’s tough on the court, but it’s great to be going up against that type of competition.
“It’s a big adjustment and it’s fun. It’s fun to get to learn and see how everyone is bigger, faster, quicker and just to put yourself on the same court is a learning experience,” said freshman Keaton Miles. “We can soak up anything and as freshman that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re just trying to be like a sponge and soak up everything.”
