MetroNews has learned that there has been reorganization among the basketball coaching staff for West Virginia and head coach Bob Huggins.
Current assistant coach Billy Hahn will become the team’s new assistant to the head coach. Meanwhile, current director of basketball operations Jerrod Calhoun will take over Hahn’s role as an assistant on July 1st.
“At this juncture where the program is with nine new guys, we felt with my schedule and as much time I spend out of the office recruiting and with speaking engagements, that we needed someone who has sat in the head coaching chair, particularly with the amount of new guys we have,” said Huggins in a statement released by WVU. “Obviously, Billy’s experience gives us that person to serve as my aide in administrative matters and with the overall day-to-day operations of Mountaineer basketball.”
“This change certainly opens up tremendous opportunities for Jerrod and one he will take full advantage of,” continued Huggins. “We look forward to his exuberance in terms of recruiting.”
Calhoun came to West Virginia from Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio, where he spent three seasons as assistant basketball coach. He began his coaching career at Cincinnati in 2003-04, where he served as a student assistant under Coach Huggins.
The Cleveland, Ohio native played two years of college basketball at Cleveland State. He graduated in 2004 from Cincinnati with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a minor in communications.
Hahn, meanwhile, has been in the coaching ranks for over 30 years, spending much of that time at Maryland where he was an assistant to Gary Williams for 12 seasons from 1989-2001.
After those 12 years with the Terps, Hahn served as head men’s basketball coach at La Salle for three years from 2001-04. He later joined Coach Huggins’ staff in May of 2007.
His other coaching stints going back to 1975 include stops at Morris Harvey, Davidson, Rhode Island and Ohio.
