For the sixth consecutive year, West Virginia University will have a record-breaking number of students at the beginning of its fall semester, which starts Monday. Preliminary enrollment numbers show 27,500 students at the Morgantown campus, an increase of about 400 students -- or nearly 1.5 percent -- from 2006, according to a WVU release.
This weekend marks move-in day for about 5,500 students who live in 14 university residence halls.
School officials are touting the increasing quality of new students at WVU.
"More and more of the brightest students from all over the state and across the country are choosing WVU," said Mike Garrison, who takes over as the next WVU president Sept. 1.
The 4,700 making up the freshmen class have among the highest in test scores and grade-point averages in school history, and about 1,300 new recipients of the Promise Scholarship are also expected to attend WVU, states the release.
WVU also expects to break the record for the number of new National Merit finalists on campus, with 29. National Merit scholarships are awarded to a select number of high school students with above-average test scores and grades. © Copyright 1996-2007 The Charleston Gazette
