I've seen videos of Irvin and he's an animal. From everything I've been reading it seems nobody we have can block him. I really think it's not our blocking, he's just THAT good!

I think it all depends on the outcome of the allegations, which I'm hoping amounts to a good slap on the wrist. Even though classified as major violations, I think they're probably about as minor as you can get for a major. The new infractions that surfaced yesterday surely won't help though. With all the returning starters we have I fully expect a great season, but my opinion is if he wins 9 games a year he'll be here for as long as he wants.

By Geoff Coyle for wvillustrated.com Aug. 9, 2010 Day 3 PHOTO GALLERY
- The Mountaineers practiced on the grass field Monday, the first time the media has been privy to such a setting in recent memory. A grounds crew laid down new sod last year on the field, and many of the players were commenting on how soft the turf felt when compared with the artificial variety they have become accustomed to in the stadium and the indoor facility.
- It was also the first time the players put on shoulder pads and practiced in “shells” so far this camp. Scooter Berry had this to say about the day’s gear on his twitter account earlier in the day:
“We in Shells today a lil hittin is on the agenda!!!!”
There may have been a little hitting, but most of it was saved until after the security had shoved the media from the premises, so there was not much physicality to comment on. You can be sure that Coach Stewart will have a few words to say about it in his press conference, though.
- We did briefly get a glimpse of the linebackers working on blocking and pass rushing before trying their moves on the halfbacks and fullbacks. For the most part, the defense dominated the drill.
One of a few sparks for the offense came when freshmen Trey Johnson and Jewone Snow went at it and Johnson (5-10, 172) handled Snow (6-3, 230). One of the linebackers called out to Snow not to let such a small player show him up, while Johnson got praise from his impressed group of blockers.
Matt Lindamood took Branko Busick to the ground on the final rep of the drill, but Busick demanded another chance to get past Lindamood and to the quarterback. So they lined up and went at it again, but with the exact same result.
[glow=red,2,300]The highlight of the entire drill was Bruce Irvin, who completely manhandled anyone who Coach Beatty put in his path. It did not even look fair for most of the reps he took. Noel Devine, Ryan Clarke and any number of other blockers barely got a hand on him before he brushed past for the sack. At one point, an incredulous defender remarked, “That (expletive) is strong!” Indeed, he appears to be fairly strong. [/glow]
- Mike Joseph and his staff had a sand pit installed at the back left corner of the field in the past few weeks. The pit – which measures roughly 30 yards in length, 15 in width and about two feet in height – is meant to serve as a surface for plyometrics and other workouts that are considered high impact. By using the sand, the impact is reduced significantly and the chance of injury diminishes.
- The receivers and defensive backs had a one-on-one period, and there were mixed results. J.D. Woods had a spectacular grab down the sidelines over Keith Tandy, and the very next play Anthony Vecchio had another interception on the drill, but cornerbacks coach David Lockwood admitted afterward that it was mostly the result of his vastly underthrown pass. Eddie Davis ended the drill on a nice catch, barely keeping his feet in bounds as Pat Miller swatted at the ball from behind.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia football team could again be in violation of NCAA rules. Reports surfaced Tuesday afternoon that the Mountaineers had violated rule 17.9.2.3, which states:
“During the first two days of the acclimatization period, helmets shall be the only piece of protective equipment student-athletes may wear. During the third and fourth days of the acclimatization period, helmets and shoulder pads shall be the only pieces of protective equipment student-athletes may wear. During the final day of the five-day period and on any days thereafter, student-athletes may practice in full pads.”
Photos and videos from the first two days of practice this year, as well as in 2009, show multiple players wearing protective vests under their jerseys, which would violate the dress code outlined in the first sentence of the rule.
WVU sports communications director Michael Fragale issued this statement Tuesday at Bill Stewart’s press briefing: "We are aware that some players were wearing vests during the first two practice days. We are exploring further, will declare a secondary infraction and document it through the appropriate process.”
Stewart had no comment on the matter during his regular 5:45 p.m. press conference, and Fragale said at this time there is no forthcoming statement from Athletic Director Oliver Luck.
Another statement was released from the university regarding the time frame in which WVU will have to respond to the allegations outlined against the football program last week.
“The NCAA has informed WVU that it will have 90 days to respond to its Notice of Allegations and to expect its hearing before the Committee on Infractions to take place in February, 2011. WVU was prepared to respond under either time frame. We are anxious to move forward.”
Fragale said Tuesday that the university had initially intended to have their response prepared in 76 days.

Tony Caridi was in Beckley Tuesday night for "Inside The Huddle" to raise money for Hospice of Southern West Virginia. He was joined by Jerry West. It was a tailgate atmosphere with food and beverages and everyone sporting their Mountaineer attire. He showed the recruiting video, had a question and answer session with Jerry, talked about the upcoming Football and Basketball season and recruiting among other things. A couple of newcomers that he is really excited about is Ivan McCartney and Bruce Irvin. The overall feeling I got is that he's really excited about this year and says it all depends on when the light bulb "clicks on" for Geno. He was also impressed with the turnout...525 people! He said that is why he loves West Virginia, there isn't anywhere else that you can drive for 3 hours from the University and put 500 people in a room. He said that just don't happen. It was a great night thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance! Pic below......

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Jim Furyk is already a ‘favorite’ to win the Greenbrier Classic, which kicks off today on The Greenbrier Resort’s Old White course.
After all, of the participants in the field he is the top-ranked golfer on the FedExCup points standings list, at fifth. He can vault passed Ernie Els to No. 1 with a win.
On Wednesday he shot a 5-under in the Pro-Am event on the Old White.
But he may just jump into contention as a fan favorite when this bit of information gets out.
Turns out Furyk is a West Virginia Mountaineer football fan.
“It is accurate,” he said of the rumor. “One of my closest friends at home (in Florida, Lee Kaplan) grew up in Morgantown and spent a couple years at WVU, and I’ve been to about three games in the past few years.”
Jim Furyk in the Blue Lot tailgating?
Seems so.
“Morgantown is a fun place to hang out. I’ve actually been given a couple of pictures of people that have taken pictures of me tailgating at the games, so it’s kind of been fun.”
And memorable.
“One was years and years ago,” Furyk said of the Mountaineers’ 1998 season-opening 34-17 loss to No. 1 Ohio State. “My wife went to Ohio State. Unfortunately, I had an Ohio State hat on there, because as we talked about earlier, you gotta keep momma happy.”
Furyk, it turns out, is a huge college football fan. He makes several trips with family and friends to see games every year.
And Morgantown is annually on his itinerary.
“It’s a great atmosphere,” the guy who has two wins this year on tour. “Obviously the whole community lives and dies with every play of every game. That’s fun to watch no matter where you’re at.”
Furyk will likely live and die with every shot of every hole this week. There is little doubt a third win this year - something he has never accomplished — would be huge in the FedExCup standings.
“It’s the win that I am most concerned about,” Furyk said. “To win and vault to No. 1 and basically be cemented in one of those top three spots for sure is a bonus.”
While many of the world’s top players passed on the event, Furyk said it was a no brainer for him.
“I’ve had a lot of friends that have visited here,” Furyk said. “They talk highly of the hotel. I’ve had some golf professionals at home that have played in pro ams with the members here, and they liked the golf courses. It fit into my schedule very, very well. Actually, I probably committed oh, six, eight weeks ago. I was looking forward to coming.”
Furyk said he was surprised by the amount of Mountaineers he has encountered.
“I’m shocked at how many blue and gold shirts with WV written on them I’ve seen,” Furyk said. “They’re like three hours away. It is amazing.
“I’ve signed one Virginia Tech hat all week, so the Mountie fans definitely have them outnumbered. And I hear they’re closer. Virginia Tech is what, two hours away?
“It’s amazing. There’s a lot of blue and gold out there. I’m surprised, because it’s clear on the other side of the state.”
Seems the golfer has figured out that, like himself, Mountaineer fans travel.

Which incoming freshman or JC transfer do you think will make the biggest impact this season?
I'm thinking Bruce Irvin. I've seen some of his videos and he's a madman on the field! I just hope he picks up the D schemes quickly.
