Great game and a great win! The only thing I can add is that the crowd gets an A+. I was at every home game this year except the Marshall game and they were by far more into this game than any other. Chants of "Eat shit Pitt!" echoed throughout the stadium all night. Not very nice but it's Pitt, screw 'em!!
ND's loss yesterday provided 1 of the 3 pieces we need for a ticket to the Gator Bowl, the other 2 are a win against Rutgers and a Pitt loss to Cincy. There's a distinct possibility of a WVU-VT matchup and IMO there's no way in hell the Gator would pass up that opportunity.

Randy Edsall Thanks West Virginians MetroNews Morgantown, Monongalia County
Coach Randy Edsall: MetroNews Talkline
((Here is the text of a letter sent by U-CONN Coach Randy Edsall to West Virginia))
Dear West Virginia University Community Members and Football Fans:
On behalf of the entire University of Connecticut football family, I would like to say thank you for all your support and appreciation at our game last Saturday and the week leading into it.
The response that you gave our team before and after the game was tremendous and greatly appreciated. The pregame moment of silence and team handshake was the most moving experience I have ever had in my 29 years of coaching football.
The UConn football team lost a great teammate and friend when Jasper Howard was taken from us. We still have some hurt inside of us here at UConn, but what all of you did at West Virginia made us feel better.
I would like to especially thank my friend Bill Stewart for all his support during this period.
Thank you again to everyone and may God bless you all.
Sincerely,
Randy Edsall
Head Football Coach
University of Connecticut

A Tremendous Display of Compassion' MetroNews Talkline Morgantown, Monongalia County
"It made you believe in people."
University of Connecticut Head Football Coach Randy Edsall says the reception his team received Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown is not something he'll ever forget.
"That just tremendous display of compassion and sympathy and sportsmanship was something I'd never been a part of and I just wanted to thank them on behalf of our team," Edsall says of the letter he wrote this week to West Virginia University and its fans.
The Huskies received a standing ovation prior to kickoff for Saturday's game. The game came less than a week after the murder of Player Jasper Howard who was killed on U-CONN's campus.
On Tuesday, one person was charged with murder for the death of the 20 year old. Two others were charged in connection with the fight that lead to Howard's death.
Mountaineer Maniacs President Cassie Werner was in the stands during the tribute to Howard on Saturday. "It was pretty amazing," she says. "There was no confusion. Everyone was quiet. There wasn't a single boo."
Werner says it shows Mountaineer fans can be Mountaineer fans in a respectful way.
"At the beginning of the game, we all were respectful. We were quiet. We understood what they were going through and we appreciated that but, if you really think about it, once the ball was kicked off, once we started, it was just another West Virginia game," Werner said on Wednesday's MetroNews Talkline.
"We were as passionate as ever."
West Virginia University Vice President for Student Services Ken Gray says something good has come out of Saturday.
"It shows that we are very compassionate if we want to be. It shows that we're very civil if we want to be," Gray says. "What it says about us as a Mountaineer Nation, it was one of things that would bring tears to your eyes."
U-CONN is at home to face Rutgers this weekend. WVU is on the road to take on South Florida in a Friday night game.

Pretty much agree as usual smurph. I think the adjustments need to happen quicker, we can't wait until halftime every game or it's eventually going to be too late. Although Devine's touchdown was a thing of beauty, my Player(s) of the game are the 55,000 plus Mountaineer fans who gave the Huskies a thunderous standing ovation as they ran onto the field. It was sincere, it was heartfelt and it was a very touching moment that I was glad to be a part of as our fans showed their compassion for the Huskie nation in mourning the loss of Jazz Howard. I'm glad the announcers made note of the support of our fans several times throughout the game. We truly have the best fans in college football, although our reputation is not as such.

After reading the BE Pre-Season poll post I searched for national polls. Out of about 10 I found, WVU was in the top 10 in all of them. Probably the most impressive poll was Dick Vitale's who has them at #9, and one other had them #5. I sure hope they are all right!

Geno was impressive and I think we'll be OK with him in the future. I'm hoping the second half was the defining moment for our defense, that's what I've been waiting to see!!

Nice assessment as usual smurph, but I gotta disagree with the pass D rating. Plain and simple, they're not very good. The best play of the day was the interference call on Hogan because he was ACTUALLY close enough to the receiver to interfere with him. Off the top of my head I can recall 3 drops that would have gone for nice gains. I know catching the ball is part of the game but there were no defenders near them. Some of the blame could go to the D front or Casteel I suppose because they're not getting enough pressure on the QB. I still think we can outscore enough teams to win 10 games, but it looks like the BE title goes through Cincy this year and if they don't improve Pike will throw for 500 yards against them. Otherwise I think we're looking really good except for the inability to go for the kill. The Auburn, Colorado and Syracuse games all should have been put away early. It was good to see some of the younger players and I really liked the fact that Stew put Geno in with us pinned at the 5, shows he really has confidence in him. Alston looked pretty good as well. After 5 games I can now safely say Ryan Clarke is the ANSWER to our short yardage woes, the kid is a stud!!

Oh, a bright spot that I forgot to mention is Ryan Clarke, this kid is getting the job done in short yardage situations. Not a whole lot of carries so far but averaging nearly 5 yards per carry with 3 TD's. I see a very bright future as a Mountaineer for him.

It wasn't very pretty but yes it's a win and that is all that really matters . My outlook on this team is that IF we hold on to the ball we are virtually unstoppable. We've left 50+ points on the field the last 2 games because of turnovers. The offense is potent and can strike very quickly. Jarrett needs to settle down and just do what he did in the first 2 games, I think he still had flashbacks of the Auburn game last night not wanting to make the same mistakes. The defensive backs need some improvement without a doubt. I'm not going to be rough on the line and linebackers because they were held on virtually every play without getting the calls from the Big 12 crew but were still able to get some occasional pressure on the QB which resulted in incompletions and a couple of sacks. I'm hoping the D will gel all of a sudden like it did last year. We have 3 "should win" games to get tuned up before USF and I think we'll be OK by then. Honestly there's only 1 statistic I'm concerned about and that's the score. If the D can improve any at all and give our offense more chances, AND we hold on to the ball we will outscore anyone.

When I left Morgantown yesterday I wasn't very pleased, but after watching it this morning my perspective changed dramatically. First off I'll agree with Joe, Mike Brown is a hell of a ball player and honestly I'm wondering why he's not playing for a BCS school. Kickoff coverage in the second half was excellent, hopefully the personnel changes Stew made has corrected that problem already. JB looked really good, although in the first half there were OPEN receivers several times which you couldn't see on TV, but was obvious from my vantage point in section 202. And by the way, the man can run!! Penalties in key situations was a problem, but as I recall they were all personal fouls and interference, I don't remember any procedure or holding calls which is outstanding for the first game. It's obvious that anything close to a head to head blow will be called by the refs this year and I think they were all good calls except for the one called on JT late in the second half. A few defensive lapses pissed me off but JT, Lazear and Miller looked outstanding. I hated giving up that last TD but I noticed several starters on the sideline during that series, which means the reserves need to get better. I was totally pleased with Bitancurt which was one area I was concerned with. Overall it wasn't the blowout we expected, but it really wasn't that bad, especially compared to last year when we couldn't get Villanova off the field. Yes there's work to be done, but there always is this early in the season. Again, there are some things that need to be ironed out, but I honestly believe we're way better than we were this time last year and it's going to be a very good season!!
